Five tips for safe driving in summer

By Dean Shaw · On June 25, 2021

Whilst driving in winter may seem like a more danger-filled experience, the heat and brightness of summer can present its own problems. Not to mention the increase in traffic as we flock to our nearest seaside destination – you certainly need to keep your wits about you when navigating the roads this summer. To help you get in the know, we’ve pulled together some top tips and tricks to ensure you’re driving as safely as possible this season.

  1. Keep an eye out for distractions

Admittedly, this is something you should be doing all year round, and will have been hammered into you when you first learnt to drive, especially with Bill Plant Driving School. But as the weather heats up, the roads will become even more crowded. Whether that’s families on their way to holiday homes or a group of mates flocking to the beach, the buzz of summer will inevitably lead to some easy mistakes being made. Try to avoid driving close to distracted drivers the best you can, and always make sure to check your mirrors, perhaps more than you normally would.

  1. Stay a step ahead of the weather

Living in the UK, you never quite know what you’re going to get when it comes to the weather, even in summer. So, it’s best practice to keep an eye on the weather forecast before you start off on a long drive. What’s more, try to keep your car stocked with any essentials that will help you through extreme weathers such as ponchos, de-icer and a flask, to name just a few.

  1. Keep essential items in your car

As we just mentioned, keeping certain items in your car is always a good idea. In the case of an extreme heatwave – chance would be a find thing! – it’s a good idea to keep bottled water in your car, along with snacks and a blanket. These items are great for long road trips, but would also come in handy should you end up breaking down.

  1. Check for traffic updates

The weather isn’t all that you should be worried about. As the road will be busier (see number 1) and so will the likelihood of traffic building up on the roads. Everyone is bound to have the same idea when the sun finally settles in the sky, and get behind the wheel on the search for somewhere to enjoy the nice weather. To ensure you’re not met with any unwanted surprises, make sure to check the current traffic conditions on the Highways England website before setting off on your summer adventure. Whilst on your drive, you can also get live updates and travel news from local radio channels.

  1. Avoid the glare

The sun can bring with it several distractions when driving, namely a glare across your windscreen. Make sure to keep your screen as clean and clear as possible, and have a pair of sunglasses handy to help combat any obstructions from the bright light of the sun. Also ensure that you utilise your car’s sun visor to block out any glare or harsh light – keeping your vision as clear as possible when driving.
