Life Hacks: Moving Home Tips And Tricks

By Dean Shaw · On May 17, 2016

Moving house is no doubt one of life’s most stressful events. You need to pack up everything you own and transport it safely to your new destination. However, moving can also be an exciting time as you are entering a new chapter in your life.

To help make your moving day less painful and more plain sailing we have put together a few helpful tips and tricks below.

In the Kitchen

Always start in here to make life easier for yourself.  Try not to buy groceries during the week you are moving and cut down on the amount you buy the week before. This will make cleaning out the fridge a lot quicker and avoid unnecessary wastage. Don’t forget about your freezer, try to defrost it at least, a day before moving out.

When packing plates, the best thing to use is Styrofoam plates. You can place these in-between each of your plates to protect from breakages in transit. They are cheap to buy and you can find them in most discount stores or online on websites like eBay.

In the Bedroom

A tip I have found useful from moving country once or twice is: if you roll up your clothes it will undoubtedly save you heaps of space in your suitcase.

You could also, simply keep all of your clothes on their hangers instead of packing them. Put them into plastic bags on the hangers so when you get to your new house all you have to do is simply take them out of the bag and hang them back up.

In the Bathroom

In order to avoid unwanted messy explosions in your suitcases or boxes, make sure you cover all bottles of liquid with plastic wrap before putting the top on.

Remember when packing mirrors to pack each one separately and ensure that you label the outside of the box “fragile.”

Don’t forget to set aside essentials such as your toothbrush and toothpaste for the day of your move.

In the Living Room

Before you start taking anything electrical apart especially the back of the precious television make sure and photograph it first. This will save you from tearing your hair out when you are frantically trying to put it back together.

Hire Professional Help

Organise professional help for your moving day, to help take the stress out of it. You can get free quotes from delivery auction websites like Shiply.

Give yourself 3-6 weeks to plan your move ahead of your moving date. This gives you enough time to find a reliable moving company.
