A guide to replacing your oil tank

By Dean Shaw · On December 12, 2018

If your property has an oil tank, it’s your responsibility to look after it and recognise when it needs to be replaced. In some cases, a tank can last up to two decades, but according to fuel management expert website https://www.certasenergy.co.uk/, 55 per cent of heating oil tanks in the UK are over 15 years old. So, if it’s been a while since yours was updated, you could be due a replacement.

To help you start the process of switching your tank to a newer model, take a look at our brief guide.

Choose the right model

Choosing the right replacement tank for your property is important. Aside from making sure the tank fulfills your needs and requirements, it’s essential that the model is safe, has been made to a high quality and has been tested in line with relevant industry standards. Your tank should be marked with the maximum filling capacity, as well as instructions on what to do if there is an oil spill or leak.

Think about where it will go

Since you’re replacing your oil tank, you may assume that the new model will go where the old one was. However, before you do this, it’s important to make sure that this is the best place for it. For example, if you’re going for an above ground tank, it’s recommended that the oil tank is positioned in an outside space. You may also want to make sure it’s placed in view of a room so that you can keep an eye on it.

Some oil tanks can be installed inside a building, but you will need to ensure that has a secondary containment. It should also be placed inside a fire resistant chamber and positioned on the lowest possible level in the building.

It’s important that you have clear access to the tank too. You should make sure there is enough space around the tank so that you can inspect it and fill it up with ease.

Enlist the help of a professional for installation

When it comes to oil tank installation, there are a number of rules and safety regulations that need to be adhered too. So, unless you’re an expert, it’s a good idea to leave it to the professionals. This will ensure that your tank has been installed correctly and safely, and you can trust that the tank model meets all of the required standards. Some companies offer guarantees with their tanks too, giving you added peace of mind.

If your oil tank is on the older side, it might be worth thinking about getting it replaced for a more efficient, safer model.
