Tips for getting your backyard in shape

By Dean Shaw · On March 2, 2017

Aussies spend a lot of time outside, and if you’ve noticed that your backyard simply isn’t as welcoming as it could be when you want to entertain friends and family, here are some tips for getting your backyard in shape:

Invest in furniture

Choosing some smart, stylish furniture is a great way to transform your backyard and make it more welcoming when you’re inviting people over. For dinners outside, a sturdy long table is a must, and you’ll also find some funky chairs can liven up the space. If you’re hoping to have a better backyard for next summer, choosing comfortable outdoor furniture is an excellent way to upgrade without making any huge changes.

Get planting

If you really want to make your backyard a relaxing space where you can enjoy nature, you’ll need to choose some new flowers and plants. If you don’t have a green thumb (and have no interest in learning), you can still have a lovely space with low-maintenance plants and flowers or hire a gardener to help you out. If you’d like to learn more about gardening (some people find it very relaxing to spend time digging in the dirt), there are plenty of professionals who can teach you, along with excellent blogs and books that can help you get started.

Use water

If you want to ensure that your backyard is a nice place where you can relax after a long day of work, consider getting some sort of water feature set up. There are plenty of small and large water features to choose from, or you may even want to install a small pond with some rocks and plants to create a lovely spot to sit by.

Think of the kids

If you have kids and/or your friends have them, they’ll want to enjoy the new backyard as well. Design a corner of your backyard just for them, and consider installing some fun new swings or a slide for them to play on. If you have some dirt left over you can even make them a small garden to play with and teach them how to look after plants, or you can grab an old tractor tyre and some sand so they can have their very own sandpit to play with while the adults are having their own fun.

Choose your lighting

There are a number of different things to think about when you’re choosing your lighting, and you’ll want to consider how often you sit outside once it’s dark. It can be a great idea to choose lights scattered around the garden, and there are some excellent options that are solar-powered, or you could go a little whimsical and choose some fairy lights for your trees, fence, or along the roof of your house.

As you can see there are a number of ways you can easily change your backyard, so you’ll be completely ready for entertaining next summer.
