What To Do With An Empty Basement Space?

By Dean Shaw · On October 27, 2020

Have you moved into a new home with a basement and are wondering how to take advantage of the space? A basement area provides a wealth of opportunities but depending on the quality of your basement, will influence how you can use it. Basements in the traditional sense are dark, dingy places of damp and mould and only fit for the temporary storage of Christmas decorations between the holiday seasons. With a bit of investment of a basement tanking service, you can take your basement from uninhabitable to haven, fully sealed against penetrating damp and able to retain warmth.

Extra Pantry Storage

Depending on the size of your kitchen, you may be struggling with a lack of space for all your kitchen gadgets and keeping large stocks of essentials. Using part of a finished basement as additional storage can be a great way of freeing up room and clearing away clutter. As basements tend to be cooler than the main floor, this is also a popular space for people to install wine racks to keep their prized wine collection or store root vegetables which last much longer when out of direct sunlight.

An Additional Living Space

Growing families and even couples that work from home together will understand the frustration of needing a little space for yourself. Using the finished basement as additional living space can provide ample room for those living together to stretch out and enjoy some time to themselves or similarly can become a dedicated space for a specific past time. You might use the basement as a crafting or gaming area, where you don’t mind a bit of mess and clutter as you tend to entertain guests on the main floor.

Office Spaces

As more people get the opportunity to work from home, they are beginning to realise that simply setting up on the sofa with a laptop for the day isn’t the best way to be productive or comfortable. Dedicated working space can do wonders for your motivation and it helps create a distinct divide between the working day and being at home. Depending on how large your basement area is, you may even be able to section up space, providing additional office or school spaces for your other half or children to use.

Extra Bedrooms

Growing families may not always be able to afford to upsize their living accommodation which is why transforming a basement area into additional bedrooms can be a fantastic solution. Additionally, this is a great way to add a guest room without utilising real estate on the main floors of your home which are going to be more commonly in use.
