India is one of those destinations that is both enchanting and out of this world. If you’re not from another country in Asia, it’s likely India will be a huge culture shock for you. But that’s part of the charm, and there’s so many more charming features about India which make it an excellent travel destination, no matter whether you’re a budget traveller or looking for a more luxurious trip. Here are my top three reasons why you should visit and spend your holiday in India – sooner rather than later!
1. The People
Indian people are warm, welcoming, and a little nosy. When I was in India, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who invited me into their own homes to share a meal or just wanted to feed me. People are open here and happy to tell you about their lives, their stories and their hopes and dreams. Despite being a country that has both extremes of wealth and poverty, the people are for the most part very warm and welcoming. Many people in India speak English as well, ensuring that you can open up the lines of communication a little than in other Asian countries. If you’re looking for a holiday destination where you’re likely to make a new friend, be invited for a meal and maybe even to a wedding, then India is a wonderful destination for you.
2. The History
India has a lot of history and the roots of its history are mixed in with colonial history too. The Taj Mahal which is perhaps one of the most beautiful buildings in the world, only rivalled by the beauty of the story behind its creation. Varanasi is a beautiful city situated on the River Ganges, meaning it’s a very sacred place to Hindus. It’s also considered one of the oldest cities to have been continuously inhabited. It’s one of those places that is essential for any trip to India and is one of the most historic places in the entire country. The Ellora Caves are one of the largest monastery-temple cave structures in the world, and it’s cut out of rock. Want to see a giant temple that definitely rivals Angkor Wat? Virupaksha Temple is India’s answer to that. You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to history in India, so definitely include some of these incredible destinations in your next trip to India.
3. The Food
Indian food is world-famous and has become a comfort food to many. From the popular dishes that have been westernized such as butter chicken, you’ll find that authentic Indian food in India has even more flavours. You’ll also be surprised by how affordable it is to eat out in India – but don’t freak out if the other patrons in restaurants are eating with their hands, it’s totally normal. You can use naans or rotis to scoop up the food, but if you feel a little uncomfortable most restaurants will be more than happy to provide you with a spoon or fork to eat your meal. Don’t be shy with the street food, you’ll find delicious options on offer for pennies.
India is a wonderful destination that has so much to offer, so when you’re next planning a trip, consider one to India!
