4 Reasons you need to Visit Banjul, Gambia

By Dean Shaw · On April 8, 2014

You may ask yourself, “Just where in the world is Banjul, Gambia?” Banjul is the capital of Gambia which is a country in West Africa. The city is located at the mouth of Gambia River, where the Atlantic Ocean and the river meet.

The next question that you probably ask is, “Why would I go to Banjul?” Now, Banjul is a small city; moreover, it is not the type that is brimming with the hustle and bustle of a city life. But there is more to Banjul than meets the eye. If you’re looking to visit an exotic destination like Banjul, flights are easy if you Flythomascook. Here are 4 reasons you need to visit Banjul:

1. It is a quiet city

Banjul is more of a large town than a city. To others, this may sound like bad news. A city is supposed to be full of life. Well, just because Banjul is smaller than other cities in West Africa or in the world, it does not mean that it’s dead. Banjul has its own charms and it is just as lively as any other city. It has a life of its own, in a quiet but lively way. It is a matter of how you perceive life. The tranquil atmosphere allows you to relax, enjoying the exotic culture as a casual observer.

2. Friendly people

Many tourists say that the local people in Gambia are generally friendly. You can observe the same in Banjul. Because the city is small, the people tend to be more laid back. The lack of tourist sites gives you a chance to mingle with people and appreciate the culture in Banjul without distractions.

Stroll around Albert’s Market and observe how people make bargains. Enjoy the fast-paced crowd, all trying to buy or sell exotic products like colourful ethnic textiles, beaded handiwork, paintings, dried fish, paintings, and fresh fruit and vegetables. Word of advice, don’t try to haggle with the prices as most items are relatively cheap. Besides, the lives for most locals are pretty tough. Try to help by not being cheap.

3. It’s a great place to go fishing

Banjul is basically a waterfront city, so, there are a lot of river excursions that allow you to fish. It would be a great time for you to eat your own catch. However, there are also some cases wherein tourists are ripped off by river cruise agencies. Select one that can be trusted.

4. Sunny weather most of the year

Banjul is warm and dry for most months in a year – from November to June. You don’t need to worry that it will rain unexpectedly especially when you are a backpacker.
