Top things to do in San Diego

By Dean Shaw · On May 10, 2019

San Diego is one of those cities that really is great for the whole family. If you’re thinking about visiting, you’ll probably want to do your research in advance so you can get the most out of your vacay. Keep in mind that many of the attractions in San Diego are super spread out, so it’s a good idea to rent a car in San Diego for your trip.

Here are some of the top things to do in San Diego:

Drive to La Jolla

La Jolla is a great place to spend the majority of your day. Not only are there plenty of excellent shops and restaurants, but you’ll also get to enjoy some of the local wildlife. Seal Rock is a must-visit if you’re in the area, and you’ll get to watch the seals sunbathing and swimming on the beach, in the water, and on the rock.

Check out the zoo

San Diego Zoo is renowned for the variety of rare and endangered animals- with more than 3,700 to see. This zoo is more than 100 acres, and you should set aside a whole day so you can take your time seeing the attractions. Don’t miss the shows and animal presentations, and take time out for a relaxing lunch in one of the great restaurants.

Visit Coronado

As you drive across the bridge from San Diego to Coronado, you’ll love the incredible view. This is another great reason why you should rent a car in the airport. Head to Hotel Del Coronado for lunch and to learn about the hotel’s history and all the famous people who’ve stayed here.

Then, wander along the water and grab an ice cream at one of the many ice cream shops. Don’t miss the cute little boutiques and tourist-friendly attractions.

USS Midway

The USS Midway is now a museum, reflecting San Diego’s military ties. This was America’s longest-serving aircraft carrier and was home to more than 225,000 soldiers while it was in service. Some of these soldiers work as volunteers today and will tell you all about what it was like to live on the ship.

The whole family will love this museum, and you can also choose from audio guides in a variety of languages. Be sure to leave at least an afternoon free so you can take your time and get to see the entire ship.
