6 Reasons to Consider a Career in Healthcare in 2017

By Dean Shaw · On August 24, 2017

If you are looking for a new career or considering your options after school, healthcare could be a perfect choice. With so many different specialties and roles, the healthcare industry is growing and always on the lookout for talented new staff. Whether you are keen to help patients head on or prefer a role away from all the blood, there is a position to suit you. Here are just six of the fantastic reasons to pursue a career in healthcare in 2017.

A Growing Need for Staff

It could be argued that there is always a shortage of healthcare employees and a need for more. However, right now, this shortage is particularly bad. There are three main reasons for this, they are:

  • Immigration. There are more people entering the country than leaving. And, a lot of these people are arriving from war-torn or disadvantaged countries. That means they desperately need the help of healthcare professionals.
  • An aging population. As a nation, we are generally living for longer and as we get older we need more healthcare treatment and care.
  • Retiring baby boomers. An awful lot of healthcare professionals are approaching retirement and need to be replaced.

Advancements in Technology

Technology is playing a much bigger part in healthcare than ever before. This includes the development of lasers and robotics to aid treatment and the advancement of online record keeping and healthcare informatics. If you want to play a role improving the use of healthcare informatics, consider an online master in health informatics program. You don’t need any healthcare experience to study a MSHI degree and it could lead to an exciting career at the forefront of healthcare advancement.

Advancements in Research

These technological advancements, coupled with scientific developments, mean that medical research is changing. New discoveries and breakthroughs are being made all the time.

Job Security

As a qualified healthcare professional, you would never struggle to find work. While some industries fade or become redundant over time, healthcare will always be needed. As a healthcare professional, you could find work in research, practice, retirement homes, community centers, drop in centers, sexual health centers, mental health hospitals and day centers, or in the private sector. There would never be a shortage of prospects.

Prestige

Anyone working in the healthcare sector should be treated with respect. These jobs carry a certain prestige and people look up to you. Recent stories highlighting how hard our healthcare professionals work in tough situations have emphasized how much respect and admiration they deserve.

Learning

There is always the opportunity to learn when you work in healthcare. There is always new knowledge and processes to study, but you also have the chance to learn about different areas and specialties within healthcare. You’ll never be bored or feel stuck in one role.

There are many other reasons to consider a career in healthcare. You’ll have the chance to travel or even work abroad, you could work for a charity, working conditions and rights are better than ever, and it’s a rewarding path. If you need more convincing, why not have a look at some job descriptions online.
