How to make sure you get a good night’s sleep

By Dean Shaw · On March 6, 2017

Did you know that we spend an average of 25 years of our lives in bed? That’s a long time snoozing, and since we all know how rough we feel after a bad sleep, we should all be trying our best to ensure that we get a good night’s sleep as often as we can.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to ensure that you begin getting a better sleep. Did you know that the number of pillows you’re sleeping with will have an impact on your spine? If you’re using one or three pillows, your neck and spine will have a bend, something that may make you wake up feeling like you have a crick in your neck. Ideally you want to be using two pillows as this allows you to have a straight spine while you’re sleeping. This will help you reduce the amount of stress on your body while you’re sleeping, and when you’re sleeping with your spine at an unnatural angle, you may find that you have long-term pain.

If you’re a back sleeper, the best position for your spine is to be sleeping with one pillow, as this allows your spine to have adequate support and ensures that you don’t have any weird angles going on which will cause pain. The way that you’re sleeping and the amount of sleep you’re getting will have a big impact on your everyday life, which is why it’s so important to ensure that you’re doing all you can to have a good night’s sleep.

If you fall asleep cuddling a pillow, you’re actually likely to be having a better night sleep since your spine will be better supported by the pillow that you’re resting on. Of course, everyone is unique, so what is comfortable and supportive for someone else may not be right for you. If you’ve noticed that you have continuous pain, you should definitely seek medical advice so you can have care that has been tailored for your specific situation.

If you put a pillow between your knees, you’ll also find that this is a great way to support your hips, pelvis, and legs- one of the reasons why may pregnant women will often use a pillow to help them sleep.

The type of bed you’re using will have the biggest impact on your sleep. If you find yourself continually tired throughout the day and never feel rested, it may be because you’re tossing and turning all night and never getting the adequate sleep you need to recover from your day and prepare for the next one. A comfortable bed is crucial for a good night’s sleep, and Adjustamatic orthopaedic beds can do the work of numerous pillows, adjusting to ensure that your body is aligned and in the best position to ensure you get a restful sleep.
