By Dean Shaw · On November 17, 2014

Your first year at university can be tough. Moving away from home, new school, new teachers, new subjects, all the while trying to get good grades in assignments and exams. Soon you might start living off instant microwave meals and only washing your clothes when go home in the university break. However it doesn’t need to be all that hard if you stick to this university survival guide.

1. Always prepare for end of semester exams

It’s easy to let things pile up and save it for exam time, however with a little bit of work throughout the semester you can make exams a lot less stressful on yourself. Through the term use Cram.com and make yourself some online study flash cards. That way they are all ready to go when the semester finishes and you aren’t overwhelmed. Also keep good notes throughout the semester and listen out for helpful hints from your lecturers on what could be included in the final exam.

 2. Don’t party too hard

It can be hard to resist the temptations of getting totally wild in your first year at university. You are finally at an age where you can drink legally and you aren’t living at home with your parents anymore. However you will soon quickly burn out if you take it too far and remember you came to university to study. If you do want to party try and keep it to just once a week, your sleep and liver will thank you for it.

 3. Eat healthy and exercise

If you can try and eat healthy and exercise regularly then you will be much better off. Not only does healthy eating and exercise keep you from getting sick but it also helps with improved concentration and brain function. This will come in handy for your stressful exam periods. If you keep up a regular healthy eating and exercise regime then it will be with you for the rest of your time at university.

4.Step out of your comfort zone

Get out of your comfort zone and try new things. This is the time in your life where you really get to explore and discover new things. You will also get to meet some cool new people and make some great new friends. Perhaps try a class you wouldn’t think of taking or pick up a new social sport. Who knows what adventure could be waiting for you.

 5. Get yourself a good support system

Look into what support the university offers like tutors, lecturers, counselors etc. It can be tough in the first year, so set yourself up surrounded by good support, that way when things get tough you know the right people to go to.
