How the Internet Has Changed Us

By Dean Shaw · On March 31, 2014

There’s no doubt that the Internet has changed the world we live in – now we can send an email across the planet in a matter of seconds. We can download our favourite shows, music videos and movies online without leaving the house. When we’re not sure about something, we “Google” it and there’s a bunch of answers available to us in a matter of milli seconds. Life is easier, more connected and cheaper in many ways. If you’re wanting to get connected, consider iinet and view their Internet plans here. For more details on how the Internet has changed the world we live in, read on:

We Can Stalk People from our Couch:

Even if you don’t want to admit it, almost everyone who uses Facebook has used it to stalk someone – whether it’s an exes new partner, or an old friend that you’re curious about. Many people don’t realise how much Facebook shows off, even to people who aren’t within your friend network. Being as connected as Facebook allows us to can be both a blessing and a curse.

Free or Cheap Calling:

Using Skype, or similar smartphone apps to make international calls is such a blessing. Calls that could easily run in the tens or hundreds of dollars can now be made for free! All you need is a computer, smartphone or tablet and an Internet connection. This is perfect for when you’re traveling or if someone you love has to relocate somewhere else.

Working Online:

Being able to work online has changed numerous fields across the world. Freelance working has risen to a whole other level, as people can find work on freelancing websites such as Elance or Odesk. You can hire an Indian app developer while you’re sitting on the beach in Thailand.

Made Banking Easier:

Online banking is something that isn’t completely necessary but has made everything so much easier, whether you’re traveling or at home. You can easily log onto your bank’s website from a phone, computer or tablet and transfer funds or set up payments. It’s as easy as browsing Facebook.

Saved a Lot of Paper:

Emails, online magazines, digital books and online news sites have dramatically cut down on the paper we consume on a daily basis. I bought a Kindle a few months ago, download my books online directly onto my Kindle and have saved buying around 40 books. Instead of sending letters on paper, we tend to send emails. These little changes when multiplied across the 5 billion odd Internet users makes a real difference to our environment.

The Internet has changed almost everything about our lives – we’re more connected than ever. Information is as easy as a few clicks away. It has really changed this world into a more connected, global society. It will be so interesting to see all the ways in which the Internet evolves in the next few decades – I think it’ll be a bit of a ride, so hold on tight!
