In-Car Tech to Make Your Life Easier

By Dean Shaw · On November 12, 2015

Whether it’s a simple audio hook-up or a hands-free gadget that streamlines your in-car journey, there’s an array of technology now available to improve your driving experiences. Here’s a list of our favourite tech for all budgets:

Bluetooth Adaptors

One of the more affordable gadgets is the Car Bluetooth adaptor, which allows you to use your phone to stream music and calls to your car without taking your hands off the steering wheel. It’s an essential purchase for anyone looking to rid themselves of CDs in older cars that don’t already come with Bluetooth built-in.

Dash Cams

Dash cameras are rapidly moving from a niche luxury item to a must-have thanks to high-profile usage in countries like Russia, where insurers demand proof of incidents. In the UK, a dash cam can be very useful in traffic collisions, helping you capture footage of disputes. They’re also great for videoing a particularly scenic drive and watching back.

Engine Diagnostic Tool

Having problems with your car? Before you head to the mechanics and face a pricey repair bill, try an engine diagnostic tool. Devices like the iODB connects to your engines data port and displays information via a free smartphone app for iOS and Android. Some versions also let you see feedback and reports on RPM, air intake, acceleration and more.

GPS Homing Device

Ever left your car in a car park and been unable to find it when you return? With a GPS homing device installed in your car, you can easily track where you’ve left it. Better still, if your car is stolen, you can see exactly where it ends up and report it to the police.

Satellite Navigation

Despite the rise of Google Maps and other free apps that help you navigate the roads, the time-tested Sat Nav is still the most effective and reliable way to travel. Systems from the likes of TomTom are affordable and easy to use without a data connection.

Vehicle to Vehicle Booster

If, like many drivers, you’re not clued up in self-repair, it can be tough to perform maintenance tasks like jumping your car back to life when it’s out of battery. Buying a 12V vehicle-to-vehicle booster can solve this, eliminating the need to plug your jump leads to your engine. Instead, the booster works by attaching one adaptor to your cigarette lighter socket and the other to another vehicle’s cigarette socket. It then draws power from their socket to recharge your battery. A hassle-saving must-buy.
